I don’t look like a ghost, do I?

I must admit, life is just a little less exciting since I blew through Silent Hill HD so fast… although I suppose another play to get the Dog ending would be worth the effort.

Waiting around for The Secret World is just plain painful.  SO, it is my hope that someone can give me some titles to play in the meantime.  I have no idea why but I can’t seem to bring myself to get back to Heavy Rain – I ended up just sort of dropping it, which is a shame, as I understand the story is great.  I just can’t get used to the control scheme.

At some point I’ll be more inspired to post some deeply philosophical ravings about some other game – for now, I’ll just see if I can’t ingest a tremendous amount of coffee just to wake the hell up.

  1. How about Resident Evil 5? Yeah, it’s an old game (2009) but you should be able to find it for a nice low price. I know it’s $20 on the PC from Games for Windows Live but you can probably find it cheaper in box or for consoles from some retailer. It’ll at least keep you busy for a week.

    • Good call indeed – I used to love the RE franchise, but then I played (correction: *attempted* to play) RE4 on the Wii and had my ass handed to me so fast LOL. But the reviews for 5 look excellent, and it’s a huge bonus to play on the PC, my fave platform. Thank you!

  2. Hey Chaelura, a survival horror game called “Lone Survivor” was released two weeks ago, it was made by an indie guy who also did Soundless Mountain II (a 8-bit demake of Silent Hill 2). You should definitely check it out, it has a strong Silent Hill and psychological horror-vibe, the game is in 2D with a great aesthetic, both the sound effects and music are really creepy and great for an indie game.

On the cons side, the story is a bit obscure, the writing isn’t that good and the mechanics of the game are really, really tough to figure out. The game is rather shot anyway (about 3 to 4 hours), there’s 2 endings available (the mechanics that decide which ending you’ll get in are pretty much the same than in Silent Hill 2, like if you killed a ton of enemies, took a lot of pills, constantly checked a letter etc.).

You can play a free demo of the game on http://www.lonesurvivor.co.uk/demo.html it’s about 20-ish minutes, it’s just the beginning of the game.

Also, some people praise the Penumbra series and Amnesia as well, I personnaly don’t like those games very much but the survival horror atmosphere is spot on (too bad there’s jump scares and such). You can’t always attack enemies, you’re forced to run pass them, so it’s scary and stuff etc. there’s a lot of puzzle solving too.

Here’s hoping my suggestions will help you!

    • Heya Michel! Awesome to hear from you 🙂 Definitely cool they have a free demo, I’ll check that out!

And I do have Amnesia actually – that one does a fantastic job of getting in your head. Jump scares can be good *if* they’re sporadic enough, and if (as Silent Hill does so masterfully) the game does a good job just instilling that sense of dread even when nothing happens at all; great sound design goes a long way for that.

  3. I’m really, really interested in “The Secret World” after getting to play it some at PaxEast last weekend. I think there’s a huge potential there.

Dunno what you’re playing on specifically, but “Dead Space” is worth a go, if you’ve not run through it already. Definitely some good “jump out of your seat” moments. DS2 not as good as the first, from what I’ve read.

    • Oh man, jealous 😉 So wish I could have gone to PAX just for the TSW hands on. How was the gameplay? Did you get to check out riddles and the integrated browser? That’s one of the innovations I’m really looking forward to but also dreading a little – if it’s poorly implemented or feels tacked on that will make me a sad panda. I’ve been looking forward to TSW for years…

I’ve definitely heard rec’s for Dead Space, and its reviews are pretty solid. Thanks for that, I’ll check them out!

  4. You should definitely get into Heavy Rain, you won’t regret it. Probably one of the best games I ever played, once you get used to the controls they become 2nd nature.

    • Yah, it’s definitely on my list – I’d meant to play that one for soooo long, finally picked it up, and then dropped it… but I had a good excuse I promise! Silent Hill HD came out 😉

      • HAHA, fair enough, I am pretty hard into Battlefield 3 right now, so that is taking up most of my time.
I saw that you followed my site, you should click on the forum link and sign up on our forum 🙂
Also if you would be interested in doing a guest article on the site or collaborating on something let me know and we can work something out 🙂

      • Sweet! For sure, I’ll get a look at that! Could certainly do a collab/article, and we could get you a shout-out on the Link Dead Gaming cast too 🙂

      • Awesome. Glad to see you signed up!
Sounds like a plan, shoot me an email and if you have skype or something we can work out something to collaborate on.

        Cheers

      • Would you wanna do a youtube series, something like a weekly gaming wrapup type thing for my website?

      • Unfortunately I probably wouldn’t have time to devote to a youtube series – but I’m open to other suggestions for sure! P.S. I’ll be shouting out to ya on the next podcast 😀

      • Yeah, understandable. Thanks for the shoutout, appreciate it 🙂

  5. Hey there!
Thanks for the follow, I’ve returned the favour.

What kind of games are you into? What are you currently playing?

For me? I’m a pretty big competitive gamer, so I’m playing mostly fighters or League of Legends. That said, that’s far from all I play – heck, just recently I staggered through Banjo Tooie. Hah.

    • Most welcome! Some of my faves are Silent Hill 2, Fallout 3, Resistance, Dragon Age: Origins, Bioshock, Mass Effect 2, the list goes on and on 😉 Currently I have a huge list of recommendations to get to – and I am downloading Aion since it went free to play. As for fighters, I love Soul Calibur and Tekken. Oh, and Street Fighter of course, which my Bio on the LDG site can attest to LOL

      • Hah, Aion got you too, eh? I’m also downloading it…although I think I’ll be heading to the European servers…unless they’re barren or something. 😛

Hopefully it’ll bridge the gap to Guild Wars 2, although I really do have a rather large backlog that I should keep on track with.

I used to play Soul Calibur back in the day, but I didn’t spend too much time on SC4 or SC5. I never really got into Tekken either, although I do like watching it on streamed events etc.

Street fighter on the other hand, that’s where I shine. I may not be the greatest player around, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find somebody that researches stuff within the games as much as I do (outside of top-tourny level players anyway). 😀

I recently bought Dragon Age 2, apparently it might be a good thing that I never played the original. Also, I LOVE the Mass Effect series…although the last 1/3 of ME3 felt rushed and overall felt like it didn’t really take into account what had happened so far.

    • Hehe, yep. Aion is bridging the gap for me to both The Secret World and GW2.

Hmmmmm…. DA2 without playing DA:O… I suppose that might be a good thing. Those of us who started with Origins were pretty disappointed – that said, if DA2 had been released without Origins as its daddy, I might’ve had a totally different reaction.

ME is great stuff! Got into it from the free copy of ME2 I got from purchasing DA2 😉 And yes, we have a lot of podcast topics ranting about ME3’s ending hehe. Totally agree that it felt like the ending sort of wiped the decision slate clean. We dedicated a show to Marauder Shields 😉

  6. Marauder Shields…he died as Marauder Health. 😦

    *Spoilers below*

I wish they did more with TIM as a character, he had so much potential and was so mysterious…and then it all just falls apart towards the end.
